Liebster Bester Vater: In der gr\u00f6\u00dften Eile kann ich Euer Gnaden schreiben, da\u00df ich mich schon ganz gut befinde \u2014<\/strong> und (es ist zwar in keinen Zusammenhang) da\u00df mich der General der Cavallerie Erbprinz von Hessen-Homburg[b]<\/a> beym F. M.[2]<\/a> F\u00fcrst Schwarzenberg,[c]<\/a> zu seinen Regiment bitten will \u2013<\/strong> wo so viele apperturen sind, da\u00df ich n\u00e4chstens eine Escadron bekommen werde: erlaubt\u2018s der F. M.2<\/sup> so ist mir\u2019s rasend lieb, was ich ganz gewi\u00df glaube, da ich auf diese Art ~ wenn die Campagne nur ein wenig anhaltend ist. was ich vermuthe und hoffe, als Major in den lieben Zinkendorf einr\u00fccken werde k\u00f6nnen \u2014 was im Hauptquartier auf keinen Fall geschehen k\u00f6nnte da \u2014 die Zahl der Gallopins so angewachsen ist, da\u00df ich in Rang der 8te<\/sup> bin \u2014 und \u00fcbrigens w\u00e4re das die beste Art vom Regiment wech[3]<\/a> zu kommen besonders da der Graf Merveldt \u2014 mich wirklich mit seinen Gnaden \u00fcberh\u00e4uft und ich Ende der Campagne vom Regiment unm\u00f6glich wech3<\/sup> tauschen k\u00f6nnte.[d]<\/a> \u00dcbrigens suche ich gar nichts \u2014 und \u00fcberlasse mich g\u00e4nzlich, der Leitung der Vorsicht ~~<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ein paar Tagen werde ich Euer Gnaden das Geschehene mittheilen und hoffe \u2013 Euer Gnaden Ihre Zufriedenheit zu erhalten –<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2 oder 3 Tagen marschieren wir von hier endlich wech3<\/sup> ~~ nachdem uns der Benningsen[e]<\/a> mit 80 m[4]<\/a> Mann superber Truppe und 164 Kanonen hier abl\u00f6sen wird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heute ist die officiele<\/em>[5]<\/a> Nachricht hier angelangt, da\u00df die Baiern<\/em>5<\/sup>[f]<\/a> sich f\u00fcr uns \u00f6ffentlich erkl\u00e4rt haben, und ihre Truppen zu den unsern sto\u00dfen werden. \u2014 Dan die Nachricht, da\u00df Wallmoden[g]<\/a> gegen den Prinzen von Eckm\u00fchl<\/em>5<\/sup>[h]<\/a> der gegen ihm ein Corps von 9.000 Mann abschickte \u2013 einen g\u00e4nzlichen Sieg erfochten habe, da er 1.800 Mann gefangen nahm – 1200 Todte machte –<\/strong> 8 Kanonen eroberte \u2013<\/strong> nebst 2 Gener\u00e4ls –<\/strong> und alles \u00fcbrige zersprengte \u2014\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ich mu\u00df gestehen, da\u00df mir die ganze Campagne so vork\u00f6mmt, wie eine[6]<\/a> Hasenhetze, wo ein rasend geschickter Haase<\/em>1<\/sup> von sehr schlechten<\/em>5<\/sup> und ungeschickten<\/em>5<\/sup> 10 Windhunden gejagt wird ~ und wo er denn endlich doch unterliegen mu\u00df: den[7]<\/a> ich will mein Leben drauf verwetten, da\u00df wir vor<\/em>5<\/sup> den neuen Jahr beym Rhein stehen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[f]<\/a> On 8 October 1813, Bavaria withdrew from the Confederation of the Rhine, in accordance with the Treaty of Ried, and six days later joined the Allies in declaring war on France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[g]<\/a> Count Ludwig Wallmoden-Gimborn (1769\u20131862) took part in the French wars, and in 1812 he briefly entered Russian service and became commander of the Russian-German Legion. On September 16 1813 at G\u00f6hrde, he led the Russian-German legion fighting as part of the Northern Army under the command of the Swedish heir to the throne, Bernadotte, and defeated the French division sent against him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[h]<\/a> French Marshal Louis Nicolas Davout (1770\u20131823), Prince of Eckm\u00fchl (Eggm\u00fchl), captured Hamburg on 31 May 1813 and surrendered it only a year later on the orders of the new French king, Louis XVIII.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He hastens to inform him that he is well, and by this he means not only that he wishes to be accepted by the regimental commander of the Hessen-Homburg cavalry regiment, where there are so many vacancies that he could soon be a class commander. He is very pleased; if Schwarzenberg agrees to his transfer and the campaign lasts for a while longer, he has every hope of returning to Nagycenk as a major. Besides, it would be the best way for him to leave his regiment, which he could do at the end of the campaign, when Merveldt, who had been showering him with favours, would be ready to do. He would inform his father of his possible appointment within days, and hopes that his news would be to his satisfaction. In two or three days they will be gone from here, to be replaced by Benningsen’s troops with 80.000 men and 164 guns.
