Naples Le 28 Janvier<\/em>[1]<\/a>[a]<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La seul raison qui m\u2019a emp\u00each\u00e9 de vous[b]<\/a> \u00e9crire jusqu\u2019apr\u00e9sent mon cher ami, a \u00e9t\u00e9, la fatigue, et je l’avoue, la paresse, si naturellement caus\u00e9 par mon dernier s\u00e9jour de Vienne. \u2013 On peut avoir des malheurs, je trouve, qui au fond ne m\u00e9ritent pas ce nom, et qui s’oublient si facilement, mais qui suffisent cependant, pour donner une direction toute nouvelle et souvent m\u00eame tr\u00e8s d\u00e9sagr\u00e9able \u00e0 notre vie, et qui consiste, au moins pour notre m\u00e9tier, dans l’ennui et tems perdu, qui en resultent naturellement. \u2012<\/p>\n\n\n\n

C’est dans cet \u00e9tat languissant que je suis, pour ainsi dire, conduit par le tems et le sort, et en me reposant sur mes funestes[2]<\/a> trophees<\/em>,[3]<\/a> je suis comme a la pass\u00e9 de nouvelles entreprises et silencieux, en apparence, bon et quelquefois m\u00e9me nigaud je trame l\u2019acquisition de nouveaux l\u2019auriers. \u2014 Je me porte tr\u00e9s bien, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire je m\u00e8ne une vie toute nouvelle. Le repos, l\u2019ordre, je vous vois rire s’avisant, en me ma\u00eetrisant de r\u00e8gler mon S\u00e9jour. Comme nous ne d\u00e9pendons pas de nous m\u00eames! \u2013 et comme tous les objets, qui se pr\u00e9sentent \u00e0 nous, sont faites pour diriger votre volont\u00e9!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

La cour de Naples est une de plus aimables, que j\u2019aie encor vu. J\u2019avoue qu\u2019en arrivant ici j\u2019avois une pr\u00e9vention contre cette nouvelle Dynastie; mais j’en reviens de bon coeur, en m\u2019accusant de mon tort. \u2013 Dabord, je ne suis presque jamais \u00e0 la cour, donc ce n’est pas personalit\u00e9 comme vous pourriez le croire, qui m’a touch\u00e9 momentan\u00e9ment, et me laisse entrevoir les choses et les circonstances dans un jour favorable: non, mais j’aime enfin voir, un peuple heureux et content, et plus encor une arm\u00e9e belle, fort et disciplin\u00e9e “eine Sache die wir bei uns ziemlich lange nicht sehen” \u2013 En partant de Vienne je connoissois bien le sort du Roi et de son Royaume, mais j’ai cru qu’il dependoit tout-a-fait des alli\u00e9s et du congr\u00e9s, mais je vois bien maintenant que son existence ne d\u00e9pend que de lui m\u00eame, et qu’avec son arm\u00e9e, et ses talents militaires, dont j’ai \u00e9t\u00e9 malheureusement convaincu “wir haben in dem Augenblick, das ist nun einmal gar nicht zu l\u00e4ugnen, in der ganzen lieben Allianz, keinen bessern Feldherrn.” il pourroit soutenir la guerre tr\u00e8s longtems et m\u00eame tr\u00e8s avantageusement. Wenn er sich in die Geb\u00fcrge wirft, keine gro\u00dfe Schlacht annimmt, \u2013 ganz Italien hengt an ihm etc. \u2012 et nos finances! \u2013 e poi siamo stanchi a guerreggiare sempre<\/em>,1<\/sup> et nous n\u2019aurons j\u2019amais un[4]<\/a> alli\u00e9 aussi fort, et qui plus est, aussi soldat, qui nous sera tr\u00e8s bon, en cas, da\u00df wir wieder gegen die n\u00f6rdlichen Hebriden herhalten sollten” \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah mon cher je me perds tout \u00e0 fait en Politique, une chose dont on ne devoit jamais parler, et surtout moi, qui ai eu tant des Le\u00e7ons, mais un homme<\/em>,[5]<\/a> welch ein erhabenes Gesch\u00f6pf! sans volont\u00e9, sans opinion, n’est ni bon, ni mauvais pour un r\u00e9gent, et toujours tr\u00e8s mauvais pour sa nation – ayons donc volont\u00e9 et courage de ne pas supprimer nos id\u00e9es. Si tout le monde etoit comme nous cela seroit tr\u00e8s mauvais, mais que le monde seroit esclave et ridicule s’y il n’y avoit pas des gens comme nous \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Schreiben Sie mir von Wien, – Parlez-moi de ma petite Louise \u2013 a-t-elle grandi \u2013 que fait Wartensleben?[c]<\/a> dites lui bien de choses de ma part – enfin \u00e9crivez-moi si t\u00f4t que possible. \u2013 J\u2019envois cette Lettre par un Anglais qui part demain pour Florence, et que je ne connais pas: mais cette une occasion tr\u00e8s sure comme Mon. Joseph qui est b\u00eate, comme toujours, pr\u00e9tend. \u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Il y a quelque jours que j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 invit\u00e9 par le roi a une chasse qui ma extr\u00eamement amus\u00e9. Le clima, ce confortable<\/em>5<\/sup> et vraiment tout l’ensemble, rend toutes ces f\u00eates, non pas brillantes mais2<\/sup> du go\u00fbt d\u2019un homme qui a beaucoup voyag\u00e9. \u2013<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[a]<\/a> The letter was written in 1815. Sz\u00e9chenyi travelled to Naples at the end of November 1814, where he remained until March 1815.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

[b]<\/a> K\u00e1roly Rosty (1785\u20131835) was a Hussar major and aide-de-camp to Field Marshal Prince Karl Schwarzenberg (1771\u20131820), a close friend of Sz\u00e9chenyi. He wrote this letter to him with the intention that it should pass through the censors and serve as proof to the Naples police that he was benevolent and even loyal to the court of Murat. Having learned from the example of Francis Inkey, who had been expelled from Naples a few weeks earlier for his critical reports, he feared, not without reason, that he might be declared persona non grata by the Naples authorities for his previous similar statements. In two places in his letter, he therefore made flattering remarks about Murat\u2019s reign, court relations and the international role of the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily. See also SzIN 1. During his stay in Vienna, he had no time to write letters; besides, he was lazy. In the New Year, he started a new life, but even now, calm and order are not the hallmarks of his everyday life. He found the court of Naples very welcoming, and was happy to return there from Vienna. He regretted that he had become so much involved in politics, although he knew that it was a subject he should not talk about, for he himself had already learned so many lessons about it that he was aware that he could not really lecture his nation on it. He asks Rosty to write to him from Vienna and tell him how little Luisa is, whether she has grown up, and what she is doing in Wartensleben.
