[a] According to the log of Count Ferenc Széchényi, his son caught a cold during the procession before the king. He sent his family doctor, András Kiss, to Holics to cure his son. For his son’s full recovery, he confessed and offered a Holy Communion in his house chapel on 9 September 1816. OSZK Kt Oct. Germ. 257. pp. 161 and 170. It was obviously he who sent doctor Sachs too, Széchenyi’s friend and military doctor, to Holics (research by Gyula Viszota).
[b] Pál Széchényi sent the letter he had received from István to Liebenberg with the following lines: “Lieber Liebenberg! Mein Bruder ist krank in Holitsch, und zwar nicht im besten Zustand. Mir schrieb er dieses Zettel, das ich einschliesse, daraus werden Sie ersehen, was er wegen Williams anzuordnen für gut befunden; heute sind Doctor Kiss und Sax zu ihm gefahren. Ihr aufrichtiger Freund: Paul”. (Research by Gyula Viszota)
[c] William Jones was an English jockey.
[d] After the first letter of 26 August 1816, Pál Széchényi informed Liebenberg on 31 August that his brother had been in Vienna for 3 days, did not have fever any longer and asked for news from Nagycenk. In particular, he asked that if a letter arrived from William Jones’s groom – whom he had sent back to England to buy thoroughbreds in January of that year – then it be forwarded to him.
[e] The date of the letter was determined by using the letters mentioned in the notes above.
