Édes Kedves Jó Átyám!

Noha én gyenge idöm[a] miatt nem is érdemlem – meg a szép’ Magyar Könyvháznak laistromát[b] és nem is tudhatom meg-itélni elegendöen ennek a’ betsét: meg-is adott az én Kegyes Atyám; hogy én-is példáját valaha kövessem és édes Hazámnak boldogságát a’ mennyire tölem ki telhet, elöre mozdittsam.

Fógok-is iparkodni, jól tanúlni-is a’ hogy tsak lehet, és magamat joságban gyakorolni, hogy igy Édes Atyámnak örömöt tsinyálhassak háláadásul ezért a szép Könyvháznak laistromáért

Széchényi István ~[c]

[b] In 1802, Ferenc Széchényi founded the Hungarian National Museum by donating his books, manuscripts and coins worth 160,000 forints to the public domain. In 1799, he published a two-volume catalogue of his book collection, entitled “Catalogus Bibliothecae Hungaricae Francisci Com. Széchényi”. The first supplementary volume to the catalogue was published in 1803, entitled “Catalogus bibliothecae Hungaricae nationalis Széchényianae, Tomi I., Scriptores Hungaros et rerum Hungaricarum typis editos complectentis supplementum”. Ferenc Széchényi likely sent these three volumes, or at least the newly published supplementary volume, to his youngest son (too), together with other Christmas presents.
