Ertl, Batthyányi’s lawyer, has visited him. Ertl will be in Sopron on the 7th, and he asks Liebenberg to discuss important matters with him, and should promise him a couple of hundred forints.

W.[2] beӱ seinem Herrn disponibel weiß. — Ertl wird den 7ten Abends in Oedenburg seӱn: begeben Sie sich dahin, um mit ihm was[3] Nöthige zu verabreden. Ich habe nichts gethan, als den Ertl, der sich übrigens datzu antrug, zu bitten auf der Stelle, seinem Grafen, der in Gratz ist, zu schreiben. Ich sagte ihm auch mit einem pfiffigen Auge „Eine Hand wascht die Andre.”[4] –
Sie müssen ein paar 100 Gulden ihm versprechen.

[b] Probably Count János Batthyány Baptist (1784–1865) was a lieutenant colonel in the 5th Hussars Regiment, with whom Széchenyi fought against the Neapolitans in 1815. They were also related because Batthyány’s wife, Countess Mária Esterházy (1791–1830), was Széchenyi’s cousin.
