Az országgyűlés véget ért, így Széchenyi kihasználja az alkalmat, hogy egy közeli barátja, Waldstein János Angliába utazik, és vele küldi el levelét.
My Lord![a] Your Lordship’s most obliging letter of the 21. December 1835[b] reached me duly, and I am indeed at a loss now, how to apologize for not having long ere this acknowledged the honor imparted to me both by your letter and by having been elected a corresponding member of the Society for the Diffusion of useful Knowledge.[c] Your kindness may excuse such a long delay, which, you will not doubt, was merely occasioned by circumstances, and no way by want of a proper feeling for such a mark of distinction.
Now our diet being ended I avail myself of the departure of a very intimate friend of mine for England to express, as well as I am able in a foreing language to me, how happy I feel in enjoying the good opinion of an illustrious personage like your Lordship, who is and will ever be looked upon as one of the greatest benefactors of mankind.
May it please your Lordship to accept to yourself as well as to present to the Society my warmest thanks for the honor thus conferred upon me.
This letter is presented to your Lordship by Count John Waldstein,[d] an Hungarian Nobleman, whose talents are devoted to his country’s service. His present visit to England is his first. I take the liberty to recommend him to your kindness, whereby I beg leave to add my assurance of profound respect and admiration with which I have the honor to remain My Lord your most Obt SntC.
